The Boston Children’s Hospital Simulator Program achieves efficient and wide spread hospital-based simulation by pairing a centralized process-driven program with a decentralized “footprint” of distribution. Simulations are delivered at Simulation-nodes throughout the hospital as well as directly to the point at which clinical care is delivered via fully contained simulation-mobile carts.

ICU-based Simulator Suite: ICUSim

Fully equipped replica of ICU bedspace stocked with variety of patient simulators, allowing for the full range of clinical scenarios from neonatology through adolescence with adjoining control and debriefing space.

This simulation suite is a dual-purpose simulation laboratory / procedure room modeled after an actual ICU bed space. It is located within the Medical-Surgical ICU which ensures that participating staff can focus on their skill development with minimal interruption to their work schedule. The room is fully equipped with all the necessary medical equipment, as well as multiple gas outlets and several patient simulators. The variety of simulators allows for an extensive range of clinical scenarios ranging from neonatology to adolescence. The room is monitored via closed-circuit television and all relevant audio/visual information is sent to an adjacent control room where it is recorded and stored

Unit-Based Simulator Suite: UBSim

Unit-based Simulator Suite: Fully equipped recreation of unit-based/ward patient care space with embedded debriefing area and full range of audio/video capture systems. Typically used for Nursing skills and orientation sessions as well as team training courses.

Operating Room Procedural Skills Center: ORSim

Unit-based Simulator Suite: Fully equipped recreation of unit-based/ward patient care space with embedded debriefing area and full range of audio/video capture systems.  Typically used for Nursing skills and orientation sessions as well as team training courses.

Mobile Simulation Units: MobileSim

Mobile Simulation Units: Self-contained mobile carts with all necessary audio-visual and simulator equipment to deliver full-scale simulation training directly to point of care—all within a low-cost, low-space package

The proximity of the simulation suites to some clinicians, while on site, is still too far for convenient use as part of their daily work routine. Furthermore, the simulation laboratories most closely emulate the ICU and in-patient environments, but are somewhat less realistic for clinicians from other clinical areas. In order to increase opportunities for simulation-based learning for all hospital clinicians, we created a mobile simulation unit to bring ultra high fidelity simulation training programs anywhere within the hospital.  In-situ simulation allows full teams who regularly work together to practice in their actual clinical environments. The mobile simulation unit is easily transported into actual clinical areas and includes audio-visual equipment for use with a mobile human patient simulator or professional actors.
